Rail centre plan good for city, says MP

PLANS to turn a piece of industrial wasteland in Sheffield into a national rail maintenance centre can only be good news, says a city MP.

Clive Betts, pictured, reckons the intention by Network Rail to build their new maintenance centre on the old sidings, off Woodhouse Lane, Beighton will bring much-needed highly skilled jobs into the area.

The firm says 200 jobs will be created.

But some local people have already expressed concern about the plan, fearing it will lead to the loss of green space, and will bring noise and smells with it.

Mr Betts said: “I can fully sympathise with these people who live nearby having concerns, but we are talking about 200 highly paid skilled jobs.

“Initially they will come from other areas of the country from redeployments, but not everyone will want to move and over time there will be more jobs available to local people.

“The area is a derelict eyesore, not a green space. The facility will be built to proper environmental standards.”

Sheffield Council is due to consider the application in the next few weeks.
