Pupils on voyage of disc-overy

A DVD investigating the impact criminal damage can have on a community has been put together by teenagers at a Sheffield learning centre.

The disc on anti-social behaviour has been created by a team of 14 and 15-year-olds at the East City Learning Centre based at Stradbroke’s City School.

The team of 12 teenagers from different schools around the area worked on the project with community police officer Paul Chappell.

”he young people wanted to create a product that clearly showed the impact of criminal damage on a community, and the consequences that offenders face,” said centre spokeswoman Sue Finnigan.

She added: “We worked with a film-maker and South Yorkshire Police to put their digital media skills into practice in a way that meant something to the young people themselves.

“The project was very much about their passion for the subject as much as their coursework.”

The young people gave up part of their summer holidays to work on the media studies project which is an example of the kind of work that will form part of the new Creative and Media Diploma which is due to become available to Sheffield 14-year-olds from September 2008.

“We’re very pleased about the new opportunities available to us through the Diploma system,” said Coun Helen Mirfin-Boukouris, the council’s Cabinet adviser for attainment.

“Sheffield has been approved to run four out of the five new diploma lines available nationally, which is a great achievement.”

As well as Creative and Media, Sheffield will offer diplomas in engineering, construction and ICT.
