Pub party opposed by police

A PUB'S plans to hold an all-night Hallowe'en party may have to be scrapped - after police objected because of problems with anti-social behaviour.

Officers said there have been a number of incidents reported at The Sheaf, in Fraser Road, Woodseats, and they are also worried about the potential of noise disturbing surrounding residents.

The pub wants to hold the event overnight from Saturday October 27 to Sunday October 28, finishing at 6am.

Serena Varley, who is organising the party on behalf of the licensees, said: "We will keep the music noise to a minimum and the people who come to our parties are usually mature, so less likely to cause any disorder. It is a residential area, and we appreciate that, but we have never had problems organising similar events at other pubs in Sheffield in the past.

"We had parties lasting into the early hours of the morning at the Earl of Arundel and Surrey, and in Pitsmoor, and we did not have any trouble."

But Sgt Dean Hill, of Woodseats Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, has made an objection "on the grounds of crime and disorder".

He said: "The grounds for the objections are that, over the last 12 months, there have been seven incidents which have been reported at the public house, some of which have involved public order offences and assault.

"Also, one of the main objections is that The Sheaf is situated on a quiet minor road surrounded by residential accommodation. There have already been complaints regarding loud music. Residential property is within 50 yards of the venue and it is felt that should this event take place, it would be likely some of the residents would protest, with possible public order implications."

Sgt Hill added: "There has been no consultation with residents in the area. On leaving the premises at 6am, persons attending the venue would be leaving via quiet minor roads in a residential area, which is again highly likely to further disrupt residents."

Sheffield Council's licensing board were meeting today to discuss the matter.
