£1,500 for man burnt by go-kart

A MAN left scarred for life after a go-karting mishap while celebrating a friend's birthday has been awarded £1,500 in compensation.

Richard Batty, aged 26, of Hillsborough, Sheffield, suffered severe burns to the bottom of his back because the engine in the vehicle he was driving was not sufficiently insulated.

He had to attend hospital on five separate occasions - first to get the blister drained, and then for follow-up dressings to ensure the wound did not become infected.

Mr Batty, a payroll officer for the NHS, had been out with a group of mates at Avago Indoor Karting Centre, Mexborough, when the incident happened, on June 3 last year.

He said: "I noticed that my back felt hot whilst I was riding the kart but it wasn't until I finished the race and lifted my top up that I realised just how bad it was - it was red raw and starting to blister."

Staff at the centre gave him some ice for the burn and the go-kart he was riding was investigated - immediately being taken off the road.

Mr Batty said the pain became worse when he returned to his home in Watersmeet Road. The burn had started to swell up, causing him concern.

He attended at the NHS Walk-In centre at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, where it was drained and dressed, but he still had to return a further four times that week to be tended to.
