Protect city's green spaces

FOR a rare moment, it seems Labour and Lib Dem councillors are in agreement. The Lib Dems support a motion at tomorrow's council meeting for protection of the city's green belt, arguing that the countryside-feel to many parts of Sheffield is what makes it so different from other regional cities.

And Labour agrees! At least, Cabinet member for economic regeneration and planning Coun Tim Rippon says he believes the council can 'deliver the Government's new housing agenda without touching Sheffield's greenbelt'.

But the Lib Dems are also concerned about the practice of some home owners to sell off outsize houses and gardens to developers who throw up a clutch of apartments in unsuitable locations, adding to the pressure on local amenities and - worst of all - robbing suburbs of their open feel. This is a compelling argument and it would be welcome for Labour to agree on this part of the case as well.

Let us see the back of this predator

LIAR, sexual predator and callous. Mohamad Ghulam Babok is the kind of person this country can well do without. And the migrant community seeking shelter and prosperity here, along with their supporters, would do well to disown this thoroughly despicable man who faces deportation at the end of his prison sentence.

He preyed on young people, raping and assaulting them over a three year period. He betrayed victims' trust - and this country's hospitality. It is only right he should be deported at the end of his seven year sentence. In fact, this is one instance where right thinking people will agree that his time behind bars should be cut - so we can be rid of this sorry excuse for a human being.

Dare to date?

THE secret of the perfect partner lies in that all-important first kiss. Research shows that women judge a man on that first smacker and such intimate points as tongue contact and the exchange of saliva. Bring it down to that level though and it makes you wonder why anybody bothers to date at all!
