Pride party beats the rain

HUNDREDS braved the rain to celebrate South Yorkshire's first ever gay pride street party.

The wet weather failed to dampen the spirit of revellers, who were entertained by colourful entertainment including stilt walkers, drag queen Gloria Goldberg and live music.

The Pride event took place in Doncaster town centre and was attended by gay and lesbian people from across the county.

Organiser Rennie Brown, who works for South Yorkshire Police, said: “It was fantastic - Doncaster has really made its mark on the Pride map of the UK.

“It shows that what we’ve been working for over the years has come to fruition.”

Among the crowd were couple Pete Campbell and Barry Sampson, of Armthorpe, who celebrated Doncaster’s 26th civil partnership in November last year.

Pete, 54, said: “I’m just pleased it’s here now, but its taken a long time.

“It’s great to see everybody mixing together and having a good time whether they’re gay, straight, young or old.

“Doncaster’s a growing town, so it’s fitting that the county’s first Pride is happening here.”
