Poll on EU constitution

SOUTH Yorkshire residents are being asked to give their views on the proposed European Constitution via an online poll.

Spencer Pitfield, prospective Conservative Party candidate for Penistone and Stocksbridge, is calling for people in the new constituency, which also includes Ecclesfield and Dodworth, to take part in the "referendum".

The proposed EU Constit-ution - renamed the EU Reform Treaty - gives Brussels greater power over law and order and foreign affairs, and removes a large number of vetoes which allow member states to block policies they don't agree with.

Dr Pitfield, who is standing in the new seat against current Hillsborough Labour MP Angela Smith, whose constituency is being abolished, said: "Labour MPs stood on a manifesto that promised people a referendum on an EU constitution and they are now breaking that promise."
