Neighbours living in the quiet street where the woman was killed have described their horror at seeing a man wielding a carving knife.

Police have confirmed the woman died after suffering stab wounds at a flat in Glencoe Road, Norfolk Park, at 10am on Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said today the 26-year-old man arrested at the scene was still under arrest but had not yet been questioned.

Today residents on the street described seeing a man with a knife sitting on the side of the road and rocking back and forwards before stripping naked.

Alan Hardy, who lives on the street, said he heard shouting coming from outside and when he got up to investigate he saw the naked man start to throw rocks at nearby cars, holding the knife in his other hand.

The 67-year-old added: "When the police came they challenged him to put the rock down - he'd already dumped the knife in a nearby bin - but he tried to hit the policeman over the head with it. But they managed to get him down on the ground and took him away. Later on they took the girl's body out - she is supposed to have died in hospital but she looked unconscious when they brought her out." Mr Hardy, who has lived in the street for 25 years with wife Gwen, said he was shocked by what had happened.

He added: "It used to be a lovely area until the private landlords moved in, now there's bedsits all over the place. Nobody seems to care anymore, there's no community spirit - they are just here today and gone tomorrow. You don't know who you are living next to."

Gwen added: "When I came out the man was lying on the ground naked. Police had handcuffed him."
