Police station for students

A MOBILE police station will be set up in Sheffield city centre until Christmas to give safety advice to new students away from home for the first time.

The station at Barker's Pool will be staffed every weekend to give students somewhere to go for help and advice or if they run into trouble.

There will be extra high-visibility patrols and Police Community Support Officers will be carrying out surveys about what people like and don't like about the city centre to establish whether any issues need tackling.

A study into the victims of violent crime in the city centre, which has not yet been officially audited, reveals between 12 and 15 per cent were students.

It also that reveals 12 per cent of all offenders involved in violent crime were students.

Inspector Neil Mutch, who covers the city centre, said the huge droves of new arrivals year after year "present challenges" to the police.

"The return of the students to the universities is something we welcome in many ways and it adds vibrancy to the city that we would all miss. It does also, however, present challenges in ensuring that, whilst the students enjoy Sheffield, they enjoy it in a safe way," he said.

"Much effort is put in by many agencies to ensure that students understand the issues of living in and being entertained in a major city. Through welcome talks, meet-and-greet operations and crime prevention advice we try to ensure that as few students as possible become victims of any crime.

"Interactions with the students in the city centre will continue throughout October with extra patrols in the nighttime mainly aimed at ensuring that gregarious students understand that we have certain standards of behaviour we aim to promote and if necessary enforce.

"We will continue to work to ensure that we see reductions against all violent crime."
