Police say shooting was isolated attack

A POLICE chief investigating Sheffield's latest shooting is trying to calm fears that gang warfare is escalating out of control.

Detective Inspector Richard Liversidge spoke out after a man was blasted in the stomach at a party in Burngreave in the early hours of Saturday.

The victim, who underwent emergency surgery and was detained in hospital over the weekend, was shot at by a gunman in a function room at The Plaza on Spital Hill, Burngreave.

DI Liversidge said the shooting was not being linked with any others and is being treated as "a one off" rather than an escalation of gang warfare.

It came just one week after a 16-year-old boy was shot at in a car on Carlisle Street, in nearby Pitsmoor.

A 23-year-old man and 15-year-old boy were arrested in connection with the shooting and were released on bail pending further enquiries.

In the same week an 18-year-old was shot as he walked through Sheffield's Broomhall estate, in what police described as another "targeted" attack. But Saturday's shooting is being treated as a "one off" believed to be linked to a row the victim, from Skye Edge, had with another man earlier in the day.

DI Liversidge said: "At this time there is nothing to suggest that this particular incident is linked to any others that have happened in the area in the recent past."

He said extra police patrols were carried out in and around Burngreave over the weekend to try to reassure residents.

Officers investigating the latest shooting said there were around 200 revellers at the party, which was organised legally as a commercial venture.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call West Bar CID on 0114 296 4161 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
