Phoenix to shine out like a Beacon

A GIANT 30-metre long Phoenix will be set alight as the climax of an ambitious Sheffield arts project built around the theme of Fire and Flood.

The firebird will go up in flames at Parkwood Springs on the evening of October 20, lighting up the skies for miles around.

Meanwhile across the valley at Ruskin Park in Walkley, a parallel event will see the installation of ultra-violet beacons and sand, creating a glowing wonderland of intricate patterns.

Sheffield storyteller Shonaleigh has come up with themes for the work combining the children's own ideas with those of ancient storytelling and cultural legends.

Several workshops are also being run with local contemporary artist Cassie Limb in the lead-up to the event,.

The workshops are open to all and will be held this Saturday from 2pm to 5pm, as well as on the morning of the main event from 10am to 1pm.

The finale of the lighting of the Phoenix should be visible over much of the south and north west of the city.
