Pets dumped in street

A FAMILY of four Russian hamsters was found dumped in a shoe box on a Chesterfield street.

The mother, father and two babies were found in a box on Cordwell Avenue, Dunston, by a passer-by who took the foursome to the RSPCA Chesterfield Animal Centre on Spital Lane.

Now the family - known as Hayley, Frank, Nutty and Raisin - are hoping to be re-homed but their plight has led The RSPCA to issue an appeal to all pet owners.

The charity is urging pet owners never to abandon animals because is not only cruel, but illegal.

RSPCA inspector Mike Scargill said: "The hamsters are friendly and used to being handled and had probably been cared for.

"All too often we see animals which have become unwanted and are dumped.

"If someone really feels that they cannot care for their pet, they need to contact an animal welfare organisation for help

To find out about re-homing any animal from the centre call 0870 7705071.
