'Pathetic' rail service row

CAMPAIGNERS hoping to improve "pathetic and useless" services to and from Dronfield rail station are holding their first annual meeting this Friday.

The Friends of Dronfield Station will hold the meeting at Dronfield Civic Hall at 7.30pm.

The group have been lobbying rail operators to increase the frequency of services from the station, which has five trains a day in each direction.

Dr Peter Hayward, of Beeston Close, Dronfield, the organisation's chairman, described the service as "pathetic and useless" and "a joke."

He said: "If you want to go somewhere like London then the first train is at 1pm. That is no use to anyone.

"Dronfield has 25,000 people and we want to improve the situation."

He added that the group had already been in discussion with East Midlands Trains, which is due to take over the majority of Dronfield services in November.

The firm has yet to provide any guarantees that frequencies can be improved but campaigners are hopeful they can increase the number of trains.
