Youngest spectator Scarlett celebrates Ashes victory

THE CELEBRATIONS might be over for now but one young batting babe with roots of Sheffield steel will grow up knowing she was probably the youngest fan to see England clinch the Ashes at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Sheffield-born journalist Joanne Gambale took three-week-old daughter Scarlett to watch Andrew Strauss' team complete their 3-1 Ashes series triumph.

The 33-year-old England fan - chief sub editor with Australian Vogue Living magazine - attended the match with Aussie husband Paul, a former Australian under 17s cricketer who was clearly unhappy with the form of his national side.

Joanne, a former High Storrs School pupil, said: "It was fantastic that Scarlett's first ever cricket match was such an amazing day for English cricket! I doubt she'll remember being there but I'm sure she'll see England beat the Aussies plenty of times in years to come."

And Joanne has vowed Scarlett will stay close to her Yorkshire roots and true to the England cause as she grows up.

"I don't know whether she'll continue to back England as she grows up Down Under," she said.

"But I couldn't let her support the Aussies the way they're playing now - you couldn't do that to any poor child!"

Proud granddad Charles Gardner, is a sports journalist from Armthorpe in Doncaster.

He said: "I'm very jealous of little Scarlett being at such an amazing victory."
