A STRANGER in the audience provided a pleasant surprise at the end of Bawtry Amateur Dramatic Society’s performance of the black comedy Natural Causes.

Unbeknown to everyone Eric Chappell, the writer of the play, and his wife had travelled from their Lincolnshire home to see their version of his creation at the Phoenix Theatre.

The play ran for a week at the Station Road venue and featured cast members Jon Whitely, Sue Stevenson, Natalie Young, Phil Healing and Bob Geeson in the thriller directed by Patricia Abbott.

BAFTA-award winning Mr Chappell is one of the top writers of comedy in Britain and he has written over 20 plays, as well as penning some of television’s best-loved series, including Rising Damp, Only When I Laugh and Duty Free.

Theatre official Bob Geeson said: “After the performance Mr Chappell and his wife chatted with the cast and told us they had really enjoyed our production.

“He said it was the best he had seen any group perform that particular production. Coming from such a wonderful writer it was indeed a great accolade.”
