IT’S a washout. Some of Sheffield’s biggest summer events planned for this weekend, including It’s A Knockout and Cliffhanger, are off – thanks to torrential torrents which turned parks and playing fields into waterlogged lagoons.

The biggest city casualty is Cliffhanger, planned in Graves Park today and tomorrow.

Sheffield Council’s annual outdoor-pursuits show was cancelled yesterday – although the British Bouldering Championship part of the event is still going ahead.

Wacky It’s A Knockout competition in Dore tomorrow, to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice, is off. It has been rescheduled for September 9.

Stannington Gala, due to take place today in Stannington Park, is cancelled – for the first time in 21 years.

Peter Butler, chairman, said: “We did everything possible to keep it on, and we are hoping to reorganise it. The weather got us this time, the first time in 21 years.”

High Hopes Community Group was forced to cancel its High Green Fun Day, due to be held today. The group hopes to reschedule for later in the year.

Chapeltown Gala, booked today at Chapeltown Park, is off after rain left the ground unsuitable. It has been moved to Saturday, August 18.

Sharrow Festival, due to be held at Mount Pleasant Park today, is off. But organisers of Sharrow Fringe Festival, which runs alongside the main event, said exhibitions, workshops and cabaret nights will continue until July 15. And The Vine Inn on Cemetery Road is bringing the festival indoors – with headline acts from the main stage, stalls and food at the pub.

A fun day at Ruskin Park in Walkley today is cancelled, in case using waterlogged fields damages the park’s grass. It could be rescheduled for August. A planned fancy-dress pantomime animal race will instead be among the attractions at Manor Lodge Field to Feast Festival on September 8.

The Big Toddle in Hillsborough Park today has been cancelled. More than 100 youngsters from Elmore Kindergarten were due to take part, to raise money for Bernardo’s. The event will be rescheduled.

Ridgeway Carnival, planned for Ridgeway Sports and Social Club tomorrow, is off due to waterlogged ground.

M Fest, a two-day music festival at Harewood House, Leeds, where Sheffield’s Human League were to headline tomorrow with Heaven 17, is off. Organisers said: “We were left with no other decision than to abandon.”

An open-air cinema screening of movie Back to the Future on Devonshire Green last night was called off due to health and safety fears. Organisers are looking to reschedule.

And a garden party last night for the Friends of Chatsworth House has been postponed till later in the year.
