A TRAINEE cook from Sheffield has been named cream of the crop by the judges from top TV show Masterchef.

Experts John Torode and Gregg Wallace declared Chorn Boonchert Sangpurad winner of the Meadowhall Dining Quarter Challenge.

Chorn is a trainee at restaurant ChaoBaby in Meadowhall’s former Oasis food court.

The contest was staged to mark the dining area’s £7m revamp and trainee chefs from eight of the restaurants were asked to create new dishes for judging.

Chorn rustled up a Thai style slow-cooked lamb shank, served in a pumpkin half, and was up against dishes including tapas, a Manhattan chicken, a Cajun spiced burger and a tofu and tomato salad.

Gregg said the Oasis Dining Quarter’s chefs had ‘some real talent’ and John said he was ‘really impressed by the level of cooking’.
