Five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault says Sheffield must be ready to party when the race comes to the city on July 6.
France’s Hinault, 59, who won the Tour in 1978, 79, 81, 82 and 85, was in the city yesterday as the last stop of his journey round Yorkshire on the race route.
He told The Star that the people of Sheffield will enjoy the world’s biggest annual sporting event coming to their city: “The first thing people should do is prepare a really good party to watch the race. You have to make people dream about what might happen – everybody will have a great time.”
Thursday marks 100 days until the Grand Depart, which begins with stage one from Leeds to Harrogate.
Stage two races from York to Sheffield with the finish line just outside the Motorpoint Arena in Attercliffe.
