TURNER Prize-nominated artist George Shaw has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University.

Famed for his everyday paintings of gritty urban landscapes, George is widely recognised as one of the country’s most accomplished artists.

He studied fine art at the then Sheffield Polytechnic in the late 1980s before completing a teacher training course.

A retrospective of his work was held at the Baltic Gallery in Gateshead last year.
