TOP school choirs from across the country are set to do battle in Barker’s Pool, Sheffield, this weekend in the BBC’s annual Songs of Praise competition.

The event, now in its ninth year, will be staged in the Oval Hall of Sheffield City Hall.

Twelve schools will be in the running for the trophy and title Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year. Six will sing in the junior section and six in the senior category.

The judging line-up will include pop singer and vocal coach-to-the-stars David Grant, self-styled ‘people’s tenor’ Russell Watson and conductor, musician, choirmaster, teacher and performer Suzi Digby.

Songs of Praise host Aled Jones will present three programmes recorded at the event, which include the junior semi-final on Saturday and the senior semi-finals on Sunday. They will be on BBC1 on March 27, April 3 and April 10.

Tickets for members of the audience have already been allocated to spectators who applied by phone or email.
