A BUDDING singer is just one step away from performing at the 02 Arena in London after impressing in a contest for youngsters.

Sarah Shaw, aged 13, from Beauchief, has been picked for the area final of the TeenStar talent competition after wowing judges with her rendition of Katy Perry’s The One That Got Away at Sheffield City Hall.

Mum Josée said her talented daughter, who can also play the guitar and piano, is taking it all in her stride.

“We’re all so excited, but Sarah is the calmest one of us all,” she said.

“I didn’t think her performance to reach the regional final was anywhere near her best, but it obviously impressed the judges enough to send her through.”

Out of 9,000 who applied, Sarah is now down to the final five, with just one person making it to the final in London.

Josée hopes the competition will be a springboard towards helping her daughter’s dream of becoming a professional singer.

“Being a singer is all she has ever wanted to do,” said Josée.

“On her first birthday we all sang happy birthday and clapped and absolutely loved it. She kept making us do it again. Looking back, that was a massive moment because she showed her love of song and applause.”

As she has got older Sarah, who attends Notre Dame High School in Fulwood, has taken every opportunity to be on stage, winning prizes from the University of London and London College of music.

She has also performed with theatre companies, in Manor Operatic’s production of Annie at City Hall and Easy Street’s production of Les Mis at the Sheffield University drama studio.

For her birthday, Sarah asked for time in a studio to record songs she has written herself, and for Christmas she asked for an amp and a microphone.

“I’ve always held her back because she has wanted to be on Britain’s Got Talent and things like that, but I thought she was very young and that there will plenty of time,” said Josée.

Sarah has been nominated for The Star’s Superkids awards in the music and performing arts category.
