Drinkers had a shock of the cultural kind when they discovered artists had set up in their favourite Sheffield pubs.

Pub Scrawl – featuring 10 Sheffield artists showcasing their work in 10 venues – drew in around 1,500 fans.

But there was also the odd person who had no idea what was going on when they walked in for a swift half.

“There were a few people who hadn’t known what was going on but they still joined in”, said Chris Smith, manager for city artist Pete McKee, whose gallery A Month of Sundays put together the line-up.

“They were people who don’t necessarily go to art galleries and that is kind of the point – art should be accessible for all.

“We had around 1,500 people come along which is bigger than last time and as it was a Sunday evening people had come along especially for it.

“It shows there is that interest in art.”

The first free Pub Scrawl was held in 2012 and curated by Pete McKee, but this time he took part as an artist in Fagans pub on Broad Lane.

Many of the exhibitions this year were interactive so guests could get involved _ and the details were kept under wraps until opening.

Jo Peel created a ‘greasy spoon café’ serving food in The Bowery on Division Street and a collaboration between Nick Deakin and Tom Newell allowed people to play with two Mr Potato Heads.

The free event, which included guided tours for some fans, was also a success for local bars and pubs.

At The Bath Hotel on Victoria Street artist James Green transformed the snug with 104 miniature donkeys, hay and accordion music playing on a loop.

A staff member said: “It was quite surreal but people seemed to enjoy it.

“We were really busy all night.”

Drinkers could also sample the official Pub Scrawl beer in the venues.

Other artists who took part were India Hobson, Human Studio, 65daysofstatic, In The Nursery & Anthony Bennett, Studio Bink and Jonathan Wilkinson.
