A ROAD safety group has welcomed an increase in the number of insurance policies which reward safe driving for young motorists.
Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership says the policies, which offer lower premiums than standard insurance, are “worth considering” alongside advanced training for new drivers.
The policies use new ‘smartbox’ technology which monitors the driving of the insurance holder, using a traffic light system or by giving marks out of five.
Ratings are sent to insurers via satellite and policy holders can check their scores online.
Motorists face charges or cancellation if they drive badly, but get cashback for good ratings.
They can ask to be covered for a fixed distance, then pay for top-ups or earn free miles.
