PUPILS at a Derbyshire school had a lesson with a difference - when they were taught how to make Christmas puddings.
Around 30 juniors and 20 infants from Grindleford Primary took part in workshops at the nearby Maynard Hotel, where they were taught the skills needed to bake the festive treats - which are to be sold to raise cash for the school.
It was the third year running the hotel invited pupils to bake with head chef Ben Hickinson.
Ben said: “We’re trying to educate the children about the food chain and how to make fantastic food by letting them learn through hands-on experience.”
He set the children a further challenge - to identify ingredients by taste, smell, colour and texture, teaching them where ingredients come from and why ‘fresh is best’ when it comes to the perfect Christmas pud.
The day culminated in a lunch served in the hotel’s ballroom, where the children enjoyed homemade cottage pie.
Maynard manager David Duffy joined the pupils and even got stuck into the Christmas pud making himself.
He said: “The experience is a great incentive for children to get cooking at home with their parents.”
