The circus comes to town next week, claiming to be the largest company touring the UK, hosted by Yasmine Smart, granddaughter of the founder.
Billy Smart started his circus in 1946 and over the next 25 years it became a household name, largely through its TV appearances. The first colour programme to be transmitted by the BBC was the Bank Holiday edition of the nation’s favourite circus. TV audiences peaked at 21 million and earned the circus a Silver Camera award.
Award-winning artistes from around the world combine in a fast-moving two-hour family show. Artistes include the Flying Aces trapeze troupe, the 10-strong Assadulin Troupe with a springboard and Russian bar acts, The Extreme Brother acrobats, clown, Jonny Bogino, plus Argentinian drumming. The show runs from Thursday to June 1.
