A petition to save a popular Sheffield pub has been handed in after being signed by over 1,700 students, staff members and residents.

A Sheffield University masterplan contains proposals to demolish the University Arms, on Western Bank.

The campaign to guarantee its future has been led by Liberal Democrat students, who say the plans were buried away in the ten year blueprint.

Harry Matthews, Liberal Democrat city council candidate for Crookes, said: “The university said that they wanted the public to respond - and they have.

“It is clear that university must not proceed with their proposal to demolish the University Arms.”

The university says that any proposals will go through individual planning processes which will allow all sides to comment.
