New library to be built as part of town centre regeneration

A new library could be built in Barnsley town centre as part of a long-awaited regeneration scheme.

The council is expected to make an announcement on the regeneration of the town centre early next year.

And a new library – on one of four possible sites – is expected to be included.

Council leader Steve Houghton said no decision would be made until consultation on the existing library is completed.

Work on a new library would mean the service moving temporarily into Wellington House before the new building was opened.

Coun Houghton said: “The plans to move the library are part of the overall plan to redevelop the town centre to improve the local economy and provide accessible services to the community.”
