An EXHIBITION celebrating art inspired by coal mining from the 1800s to the present day is being held at a South Yorkshire gallery.
The Cooper Gallery, in Barnsley, will host the display from Saturday until July 9. More than 30 works are on show, including art loaned from Leeds Art Gallery, Museums Sheffield, Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery and the National Coal Mining Museum for England. One of the pictures is Pitmen at Play by Henry Perlee Parker – the first mining picture exhibited at the Royal Academy, in 1836.
Alongside the exhibition, veterans of the glass and coal industry are asked to bring objects and photographs to the Cooper Gallery, on Friday, May 20, Friday, May 27 and Friday, June 3, between 1pm and 4pm, to help put together a future display.
