WHICH horse and rider finished third in the 1974 Grand National?

If you really want to know, ask Peter Reilly.

Peter, a history lecturer at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology, made it through to the semi-finals of the television show Mastermind.

He came top in his heat in his specialist subject - the history of the Grand National from 1960 to date.

To compete in the semi-finals, he had to brush up his knowledge of the BBC 2 TV series Our Friends in the North, broadcast in the mid-1990s.

The dad-of-two is sworn to secrecy about the outcome of the competition which is due to be broadcast in the spring.

Peter said: "I went into my Mastermind heat pretty well prepared on my specialist subject, but for the general knowledge round it was virtually impossible to revise for as there were a million questions they could ask.

"The highlight for me was enjoying the experience with my wife Debbie, who was in the audience and getting far more stressed than me!"
