A SOUTH Yorkshire railway poster has sold for £2,600 at auction in London.
The 40in x 50in poster, emblazoned with the words ‘Giants Refreshed, Pacifics in the Doncaster Locomotive Works’, was produced for British Railways by artist Terence Cuneo in or around 1950.
He described the poster as depicting ‘a peaceful scene in the Doncaster paint shop’.
Before the sale, at Bloomsbury Auctions, experts predicted it would sell for between £2,500 and £3,000.
It was either the first or one of the first railway posters by Cuneo, now regarded as one of the outstanding painters of trains. An identical poster sold at auction in London in 2001 for £2,820.
