THEY came to bid farewell to a father, a friend and - above all - a fireman...

Father-of-one Andrew Hutt, of Alport Place, Birley, was proud to have served as a firefighter.

Sadly, after 20 years with Rotherham Station's Blue Watch, he was forced to retire after being diagnosed with cancer.

The illness eventually claimed his life at the age of 55 and his friends were determined he to travel to his funeral at City Road Crematorium in the way he would have wanted - aboard a fire engine.

His great friend, Steve Cooper, said: "Andrew was a firefighter for 20 years. He talked about the fire service and his role with passion many times. This is what he would have wanted."

During his illness, Andrew raised hundreds of pounds in sponsorship for the Neurocare charity by taking part in fire-walking and abseiling events.

He leaves a daughter, Emma.
