The Bard at his best is coming to Rotherham this month with the town’s annual Shakespeare Festival being held for the sixth consecutive year.

Ten favourites will be performed by just under 1,500 young people at Magna including Macbeth, King Lear, Hamlet, Henry V and The Merchant of Venice.

The event is organised by Open Minds Theatre Company and marks Shakespeare’s 450th birthday.

Schools from across the town are involved, where 50 teachers were partnered with members of the company.

The programme begins tonight with an abridged version of Hamlet, and each performance begins at 7pm.

It concludes on June 18 with a performance of Henry V.

Joyce Thacker of the town’s Children and Young People’s Services said there would be something for everyone to enjoy.

“This festival is one of the most exciting things going on in Rotherham and indeed across South Yorkshire,” she said.

A key element of the programme is to inspire the students artistically and get them to work together as part of a functioning team.
