South Yorkshire residents are among Britain’s biggest buyers of romantic fiction.
According to online retailer Amazon, Doncaster residents order more romantic and erotic books than anywhere else in the UK.
Meanwhile, Barnsley is the eighth best-selling area of Britain. For sales in all genres of books, Doncaster is still in the top 10 ‘most well read areas’, second only to Huntingdon, in Cambridgeshire.
Caroline Sanderson, spokeswoman for campaign group the Public Lending Right, said romantic fiction sales in South Yorkshire and other northern areas mirror their popularity in libraries across the regions.
Among the most popular authors in libraries across the north of England are romantic writers Catherine Cookson , Josephine Cox and Danielle Steel.
