AN UNDERCOVER operation was mounted in Chesterfield targeting private hire drivers breaking the law and picking up fares which were not pre-booked.
Chesterfield Council workers posed as customers after Hackney Carriage drivers complained private hire drivers were flouting the rules and picking up people who had not pre-booked them.
But of the 41 private hire vehicles approached by the council's undercover licensing enforcement officers 40 refused to take the fare and just one agreed.
Coun David Stone, Chesterfield Council lead member for safe, healthy and active communities, said: "We also checked to see if Hackney Carriage drivers would accept short-distance fares as there had been complaints that some drivers were refusing them.
"Of the four drivers we approached for short journeys all accepted the fares."
