Nine awards for flourishing Barnsley

BARNSLEY is celebrating after the borough won nine awards at this year's Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

Barnsley was awarded a Silver Gilt in the city category. The judges were impressed with the "true Yorkshire spirit" that shone through as they embarked on their summer tour.

They said that despite the recent flooding the authority's workforce had worked hard with partners and community groups to maintain the standard for Yorkshire in Bloom.

They were pleased to see that friends' groups and members of the Civic Trust were entering into the spirit of the competition..

They were particularly impressed by sponsored hanging baskets in and around the town centre, the floral displays at the Town Hall, the work of Barnsley Hospice volunteers and colourful displays at public houses including The Chestnut and The Cawthorne Arms.
