New support group to help ethnic minorities

GAY, lesbian and bisexual people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds in Sheffield are being offered guidance from a new support group.

The Indigo group will offer information about relationships, friendships, dealing with discrimination, sexual health issues and information about services across the city.

The group is held on the first Wednesday of the month (6.30pm - 9.30pm) in a safe and confidential space, where people can share their experiences, develop social networks and take part in activities to help build their self-esteem.

It also offers one-to-one support with a trained professional where people can discuss any issues affecting them. This can be anything from a personal relationship to family issues or troubles in their personal or work life.

Anthony Bains, from Sheffield PCT, said: “We are delighted that we are now able to offer a dedicated service for lesbian, gay and bisexual people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds across Sheffield.

“Often there is stigma attached to being lesbian, gay or bisexual and being part of a black or minority ethnic community.

“We aim to offer people an opportunity to get together, share common experiences and reduce their social isolation, thus contributing to their mental, physical and sexual health.”
