New retail quarter named

THE new name of Sheffield's future shopping heart has been revealed - Sevenstone.

After research among 300 people, developers settled on the name for the planned new retail quarter which will start to rise from next year in the area between Pinstone Street, Barker's Pool, Division Street and Charter Square.

Hammerson say the name reflects all the aspirations they have for the huge new development - solidity, naturalness and security.

They also say the name is a reflection of Sheffield's history through its seven hills, and the grindstones which helped produce its world-famous tools and cutlery.

Carolyn Kenny, Hammerson's assistant director, said: "Stone represents the personality of Sheffield - hard but warm, rugged but beautiful, honest and natural - and the elements of stone that will be a striking and prominent feature of the scheme."

The 500 million Sevenstone project is the largest development in the city since the Second World War.

It will create a new shopping and residential heart in the city centre, with around 100 new shops, up to 200 apartments, a health club and leisure facilities.

A new curved street will be created, running from Barker's Pool to Moorhead, provisionally named New Burgess Street.

John Lewis will be relocated from Barker's Pool to a new store twice the size on the corner of Carver Street and Wellington Street, and next to it a dramatic new covered square will link through to Cross Burgess Street and the Peace Gardens.

The first shop buildings, including the new John Lewis store, are due for completion at the end of 2011.

Work has already started on the new fire station on Eyre Street, which will allow the present one on Wellington Street to be demolished next year.

Developers revealed the other names which had been in the running along with Sevenstone - including Fountainhead, Stoneways, Greatstone and Middlecross.
