New phone mast unfurled

A FAKE four metre high flagpole is set to be installed on top of Sheffield's Central Library on Surrey Street - to disguise a mobile phone mast.

The mast will replace an existing flagpole of identical height, and councillors are set to grant planning permission.

The phone mast will incorporate 2G and 3G antenna systems - and will also be capable of flying a flag.

Planners say the new flagpole will be almost identical to the old and so will not detract from the appearance of the library, which is a listed building.

The scheme will eliminate the need for an alternative ground-based mast.
