MPs welcome lights cash

GRANTS worth almost £80 million to replace Sheffield's rusting and faulty street lamps have been welcomed by city MPs.

The Government announced the funding yesterday, which will pay for 59,000 new lights to be installed in the next five years, plus maintenance costs for the next 20 years.

Hillsborough MP Angela Smith said: "Good quality street lighting helps improve road safety as well as reducing crime and the fear of crime.

"I look forward to seeing the impact of these improvements in North of Sheffield as well as other areas of the city, the benefits of which will be felt by motorists and pedestrians alike.

"This is a great example of a Labour Government working with a Labour council bringing improvements to the people of Sheffield."

David Blunkett, MP for Brightside, said: "I warmly welcome this substantial investment in Sheffield from the Government. The Labour council has been fighting for this to renew the city's street lighting and provide safe, well illuminated highways."

But he added it is now "important" that Sheffield's bid for 500 million, to renew roads, pavements and drainage systems, is approved.
