MP calls for factory plan to be 'softened'

SHEFFIELD MP Clive Betts has called for Network Rail to look at ways of "softening" its proposed engineering factory to lessen its visual impact on surrounding green belt land.

He believes the company must "drastically improve" the appearance of the 60ft high building planned for derelict sidings between Beighton Marsh and Woodhouse Washlands.

The Attercliffe Labour MP said he would support the idea of a green roof, which has been suggested by Sheffield Council planners.

Mr Betts said: "Whilst supporting the creation of highly skilled jobs in the area, I believe Network Rail have to do all they possibly can to make sure that the building is in keeping with its location, both aesthetically and environmentally.

"If developed, I want this to be a top quality, environmentally friendly building which fits into its habitat and respects the greenery around it. However, without certain assurances from Network Rail about the physical aspects of the building, it is unlikely I will be able to support it."

Network Rail's plan has angered surrounding residents, who have formed a protest campaign called 'Stop Them In Their Tracks'.

A petition containing 2,000 names has been collected.
