More kids eat veg

THE number of children eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day has increased by 17pc in two years, the Department of Heath said today.

Figures show that since The School Fruit and Vegetable scheme (SFVS) was introduced in March 2004, the amount of children achieving the “5-a-day” target rose from 27pc to 44pc in November last year.

The scheme entitles all four to six-year-olds in state infant, primary and special schools to a free piece of fruit or vegetable every day.
