Mark scales the heights to open room

A SOUTH Yorkshire dentist who climbed Africa's highest mountain opened a new facility that his massive donation helped to fund.

Mark Bishop climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in February and raised a massive 5,500 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.

The money raised from his climb up the world’s highest free-standing mountain was used to refurbish the Sensory Room at Ryegate Children’s Centre.

The room stimulates children’s senses using lights, sounds, colours, textures and aromas. It has been specially designed for children with complex medical issues like neurological conditions, autism and sight problems.

Mark, aged 41, whose dental practice is in Mapplewell, Barnsley, said: “The new room is brilliant. It looks great and I’m delighted to see it open. It’s good to see that the money raised has gone towards such an excellent cause.

“The kids who came to the opening were so thrilled with the place and I’m sure it is going to be a very special facility.”

He said of his mountain climb: “I really had no idea what I was in for and found it physically incredibly hard. I had worked at getting fit beforehand, but still suffered from altitude sickness.’’
