Major city route closed after two crashes

A MAJOR Sheffield road has been closed after two collisions - the first a serious accident in which a motorcyclist was hit by debris falling from a skip wagon.

The A57 Mosborough Parkway is shut between Coisley Hill roundabout and the Crystal Peaks roundabout, with traffic heavy on the Sheffield Parkway as a result.

The motorcyclist was knocked from his bike at around 7.43am today, between Moss Way and the Coisley Hill roundabout.

He was travelling along the A57 towards Coisley Hill, while a skip lorry was travelling in the opposite direction.

It is believed that a car door that was being carried in the skip fell from the lorry and struck the motorcyclist, knocking him from his bike and suffering serious injuries including a broken collar bone, broken arm and serious concussion.

The man has been taken to the Northern General Hospital.

It is believed that the driver of the lorry stopped a short while later, but then drove off.

Police need to speak to the driver of the skip lorry urgently. The vehicle is thought to be either an orange or red and white lorry.

Debris has yet to be recovered from the carriageway and officers are warning of delays.

A further accident happened on Handsworth Road, Handsworth, shortly before 10am today involving a van and a car.

A woman was trapped in the car and had to be freed by firefighters. Her injuries are not believed to be serious.
