Love light still shining for Diamond couple after 60 years

A COUPLE returned to their honeymoon destination for the first time in 60 years to mark their diamond wedding anniversary.

Tom and Mary Bromley revisited the Isle of Man to mark their milestone – and enjoyed a wonderful trip.

Tom, aged 84, and Mary, 81, met at a dance hall in Barnsley in 1939 when Mary was just 17.

The couple are both World War Two veterans, Tom served the duration of the war in the RAF while Mary worked for the Land Army back home.

They were married on August 15 1947 in Barnsley. They had two sons, Paul and Martyn, and a daughter Lynn, who was tragically killed in a car accident aged just 17. They are also proud grandparents to six grandchildren.

Tom worked in sales with Hoover when his military service was over and Mary worked in a clothes shop in Barnsley.

Paul said his parents, who live in Wortley, had been “magnificent dancers” in their day and added: “People often stood to watch them because they were so good. They have also both held the captaincy at Silkstone Golf Club where they have been members for 40 years.”

He said that his parents had shared the secret of their long and happy marriage with him: “They said you have to keep a good sense of humour, be patient and not lose your temper. And obviously love each other.”

The family also had a celebratory meal together to mark the anniversary, and the couple received a memorial bench with their names and the date of their wedding inscribed.

Paul said: “We have positioned it so we can look out over our favourite beauty spot from their land.”
