Kelly leads way with uni honour

DOUBLE Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes leads the field of VIPs due to be honoured by Sheffield Hallam University during the annual November graduation ceremonies.

Kelly, currently working as an Olympic ambassador, is one of nine people chosen to receive an honorary doctorate at the City Hall.

She has special connections with the city, using it as a training base before her victories at the 2004 Athens games, and ignoring medical advice to run her retirement race at the Don Valley Stadium.

Kelly will be joined by popular folk singer and actor John Tams, the Lord Bishop of Sheffield the Right Reverend Jack Nicholls, former Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University Professor Diana Green and international education expert Quentin Thompson.

Also taking to the stage will be a man who has dedicated most of his life to helping the minority ethnic communities in Sheffield, Sarwar Khan Awan, the chief executive of Sporting Equals Novlette Rennie, distinguished local businessman Christopher Jewitt, and Vicky Seddon, who before her recent retirement spent over 35 years committed to counselling students at Sheffield Hallam University.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Philip Jones said: "I am delighted that once again this year's honorary doctorates recognise individuals who have educated, inspired and supported the wider community."

University Chancellor Lord Winston will also be attending the celebrations.
