Keeping up fight in war on drugs

ANOTHER victory in the battle against drug dealing saw three criminals locked up for a total of 17 years yesterday.

The police are to be congratulated on their success and it is some comfort to the rest of us that battles are being won in the fight against drug crime.

But this case shows that criminals will always find new ways of getting and laundering money.

For the police to stay one step ahead they must be given the resources and sentencing powers to be able to track and come down hard on those who would fill our streets with narcotics.

Sentencing Judge Patrick Robertshaw said: "One of the great social evils of our age is the trafficking of dangerous class A drugs."

We echo the judge's remarks and call for ever-greater vigilance against those who would fund luxury lifestyles on the misery caused by drug dealing on our streets.

POLICE are to get new powers to ban people from areas where officers fear trouble could erupt.

Officers will have the right to order anyone over the age of 16 out of an area for up to 48 hours if they suspect that they are likely to become embroiled in violence or alcohol-related crime.

The Star says this is a sensible and long overdue precaution that will protect law-abiding citizens and reduce violence on our streets and around our pubs and clubs.
