Joy as Adrian gets the all-clear

A SHEFFIELD journalist who had his bone marrow transplant broadcast on the internet after being uniquely diagnosed with two forms of leukaemia, has been given the all-clear.

Adrian Sudbury, from High Green, underwent treatment at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and wrote about his experiences of the disease in a blog.

The 26-year-old Huddersfield Examiner newspaper reporter had been diagnosed with two distinct types of the disease, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and a second chronic form, at the same time. According to medical literature he is the only person in the world with the dual condition, which meant doctors were unable to give him a prognosis. The leuk-aemia was discovered when Adrian complained of feeling tired.

Now after 10 months of treatment which included a bone marrow transplant, Adrian says tests have shown no sign of either form of leukaemia.

He said: "I'm feeling much better. It's a really strange mix of emotions, but there is a huge sense of relief and all the dark thoughts have temporarily disappeared."

It’s hard to describe how relieved and elated I feel. I was told simply the results had come back and there was no sign of either type of the disease.”

Adrian had the bone marrow transplant - which was videoed and posted on his blog - after two cycles of chemotherapy failed.

He then spent five weeks in isolation, which he said he found physically and psychologically difficult. He said writing his blog - which can be read on The Star’s website - helped him get through it.

Throughout most of the blog he managed to remain upbeat and hoped it would encourage more donors to come forward.

But he also bravely wrote about his dark days. He said: "I thought long and hard about writing about the darker side of the whole treatment, but my grandma convinced me that to give an accurate portrayal I'd got to be truthful about everything I'd gone through.”
