International author and former Westbourne School pupil Stephen Maitland-Lewis will be the guest of honour at the school’s biggest ever prize-giving.

The independent co-educational school is to take over the Crucible on the evening of July 1 as its ceremony has outgrown the traditional school marquee.

Special guest Stephen is an award winning novelist and former investment banker who held senior positions in London, Kuwait, and on Wall Street after moving to the US in 1981. But he grew up in Sheffield and London, and received his degrees from Sheffield University.

After settling in California he owned a luxury hotel and a restaurant in Palm Springs and was also the director of marketing of a Los Angeles daily newspaper before becoming a full-time novelist.

Today, he lives in Beverly Hills and his last novel, Ambition, was recently named a finalist in the 2014 International Book Awards.

Also present at the ceremony will be Peter Waterfield, headmaster at Westbourne when Stephen was a pupil in the 1950s.

Stephen’s upcoming novel, Botticelli’s Bastard, which will be published on August 11, is dedicated to Mr Waterfield.
