Injunction served to stop dodgy concrete tradesman

ONE of Sheffield's dodgiest tradesmen is drinking in the last chance saloon after Trading Standards took him to court - and eight people turned up to give evidence against him.

A judge at Sheffield County Court hit Darren Beck, of Concrete Expressions, with an injunction which could land him in jail if the conditions are breached.

A Trading Standards spokeswoman said they had taken legal action after receiving 49 complaints in the last two years. The company has a postal address at Nursery Street, Sheffield. She said: " He would take a deposit and disappear, or if he did come back he wouldn't finish the job. On the few occasions he did finish, the concrete would start cracking.

"Typically he would take a 10 to 20 per cent deposit on a 2,500 job and disappear."

Beck attended an interview with Trading Standards officers in May last year and was asked to sign undertakings to comply with legislation. He failed to do so.

Officers then applied for an injunction in the courts. It was awarded after the judge found he had contravened the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 by failing to provide reasonable care and skill in laying concrete and within a reasonable time.

If the injunction is breached Beck will be in contempt of court and could be jailed.
