ID scheme to beat drinkers

TEENAGERS are being encouraged to apply for a proof of age scheme as shops across Sheffield crackdown on sales to underage drinkers.

Hillsborough MP Angela Smith is writing to all constituents when they turn 18 and become registered on the electoral roll, enclosing application forms for Citizen Cards.

Stores are being urged to ask for proof of age before selling alcohol and other age-restricted products such as fireworks, solvents and knives to people who appear too young.

Ms Smith said: “It’s important that the laws on alcohol and tobacco are upheld.”
